The Deicide Anthologies
by: Professor Heinrich Von Gruber
An interesting thing about Gods is that they are commonly considered to be immortal, undying, or otherwise omnipotent, and yet, we have a few examples of those that have been, shall we say, "Replaced". While most know the basics of how some of these dieties were killed, few realize that there is a far darker truth, hidden amongst the rubble of ruined civilizations and lost to time.
However, for the time being, I will focus on the gods that arouse the most controversy, Caltrus, Apollyon, Lucerina's predecessor, and, most controversial of all, Genarml.

The first diety I will cover is Apollyon. Reason being, he has the most information available. Thanks to the Ilmnfemlian Conflict, and the Elven Crusades that still rage to this day, more information on Apollyon has been uncovered than the other gods combined.
Apollyon was originally an evil elven warlord who's name is lost to time. Interestingly enough, though he led armies, he didn't seem to fight for any particular cause other than spreading murder and mayhem. With promises of land and plunder, however, he had attracted vast armies of the ancestors of the human barbarians that roam the wastes to this day, where they would butcher and loot the nations that inhabited those areas, leaving nothings standing. As a result, little evidence remains of those nations. The only thing that equalled his love of violence, was his lust for women, resulting in him turning to the worship of Malcanthet.
It was his arrogance, however, that would be his undoing. Despite that his armies were made mainly out of humans, he had no fondness for them. He seen the humans, orcs, and other races of his armies as nothing more than fodder and pawns, often knowingly sending them, by the thousands, into choke-points and funnels just to enjoy watching them get butchered by Solian forces.
In fact, Apollyon lost his life in a decisive battle against the forces of a young mercenary officer named Quain Drachelinge.
Of course, we all know, that this event was not the end of Apollyon.

Demons are sometimes known to take useful mortal servants and turn their souls into trueblood demons upon arrival in the Abyss. Orcus, in particular, is known for doing this among his cultists. When Apollyon arrived in Malcanthet's corner of the Abyss, she seen great potential in using him for one of her generals. At the time, Malcanthet was fighting with three other contenders for the title of, "Queen of the Succubi", when Apollyon's wretched soul-shell arrived in the Abyss, she saw an opportunity she couldn't pass up. He was immediately turned into an incubus demon and took on the name he is now known by, likely with most of his memories intact.
Just as the wiley seductress had predicted, Apollyon made conquest after conquest, greatly aiding Malcanthet in achieving her goal. Apollyon would later become Malcanthet's favored consort, entertaining her every twisted desire.
Though, of course, it would not be enough for Apollyon. His ambitions would not allow him to be merely a playtoy for a fickle succubus. However, before he could even begin planning to overthrow and destroy Malcanthet, she detected his intentions, and immediately exiled him to the lowest fringes of the Abyss. Much to her surprise, Apollyon wasted no time in assembling an army and taking over his layer and modelling it in his image. Malcanthet, however, had other problems in solidifying her own power base. Confident in the fact that Apollyon was too far from her, and now having his own problems in ruling a layer, Malcanthet decided to leave him alone. They would never meet again.

((OOC note: This part of the history is actually based somewhat on real pagan beliefs, (IE "The Left Hand Path". ))
The rest of Apollyon's story is well-known by most.
Moving on....
While Lucerina is not the first "Goddess of Love" (in fact she is more of a goddess of lust and hedonism), she is in actuality a benevolent one, unlike many of the dieties of similar nature worshipped by the heathens, however, the "Goddess of Love" is actually a title that belongs to Helica. Though, Helica as a love goddess has more to do with marriage, or the fondness one feels towards their offspring or family, not so much as sexual gratification. Ironically, the original goddess that covered Lucerina's portfolios was not originally associated with such behavior.
Ancient texts recovered from before the areas around northern Fenmyr were civilized, and were under tribal rule, suggested that Lucerina's predecessor was actually a goddess more associated with nature, the earth, fertility, and the harvest. The fertility portion of her portfolio included livestock and farming as well as child-bearing. Later in this history, the fertility portion of her portfolio would be celebrated above the others, eventually to the point where her status as an earth goddess would become ignored almost completely.
One ritual of most interest is one known as "The Left Hand Path" where the a woman would be part of the ritual, typically a priestess or an unmarried woman desiring a child. Please note, however, that while this ritual shares its name with some beliefs and/or rituals of the various occultists, such as the Genarml's pawns, or the thralls of demons, this ritual was not nearly as dire. It is possible that the heathen had stolen it from this originally benevolent goddess, and corrupted it. The woman would be used to represent the goddess as she took a male whom she favored. They would then have intercourse on an altar as part of a grander festival that celebrated the goddess. It was believed that the male was truly honored, as, for a small time, they had actually channeled their goddess through the woman, and he had gotten to sit at her left hand. After they were done, the festivities would begin in earnest. This usually amounted to feasting, sacrificing a goat, and then everyone getting roaring drunk.

Of course, all things end, and even the gods must die. Lucerina's predecessor had sensed this, she had lost her powers concerning the earth, and was losing believers as the realms were becoming more civilized and revering nature less and less.
As of writing this, it is unknown as to her final end, as the archeological evidence and ancient texts are mostly destroyed by time. However, some speculation exists. Some scholars believe that Lucerina is indeed the daughter of this goddess, some believe that she passed her powers over lust and beauty over to Lucerina, and is still alive, making efforts to become part of the pantheons of nature dieties, some believe that this very goddess is really Lucerina herself, having taken on a new identity to better fit her current status, and a few believe that she had seen the end coming, and had made preparations for a peaceful end, choosing Lucerina to be her successor and arranging for her power to be "found" by its current holder. None can say for sure, except for the goddesses themselves...
... And they aren't speaking about it.
