Recently, I bought a Drizzt book from the "Hunter's Blades" trilogy called, "The Thousand Orcs".
Well, first off, a little background...
I didn't hate Drizzt at first, was mostly indifferent, and in fact, thought he was a somewhat cool character.
Then I read the fucking book. Well, to be more accurate, read most of it, and have yet to finish, as I have to fucking force myself to read it.
I fail to see how Drizzt is a New York Times Bestselling character, that book is so packed with every single RPG cliche that I would sometimes think that at any moment, some fucking 12-year-old bastard would come up from behind with a dark elf faggot screaming "Drowz r peeps 2! Dun be rasist!"
However, to be fair, most of that shit wasn't a cliche before R.A. Salvatore, and I guess it shows how much a genius he is when, something that he wrote waaaaay back in the day, was fresh and interesting back then, but got copied so much that it's cliche now.
But, as it stands... Fuck Drizzt.

Oh, I forgot to add...
Anyone else got some hatejuice to spread towards popular cliches so prevalent in RPGs?

Have the first 5 books, they are awesome. The first one was kinda meh with his family, the second one was awesome with the dark gnome and the shapeshifted rock fey, the third one was kinda meh with the blind ranger and the hunter, the fourth one was awesome with the insane possessed wizard and the invasion of Icewind Dale, the fifth one was really cool with the group together, and the assassin trying to find Mithral hall.
Only read those five, and I would keep reading them if I had any more, really hard to get Salvatores' books here in Portugal, only thing I don't like about it is that as soon as Drizzt reaches the surface, the Drow basicaly stop caring that he destroyed a matron house and that he caused wars in the city, not to mention he single handedly destroyed his families name. They tried killing him on book 2, and it failed, then they stoped caring, atleast thats the impression I get after 5 books.
but I have to say that those five books are likely one of my favorite fantasy novels, sharing first place with J.R.R Tolkien's "hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings", the LotR book is amazing and any person that read it would say that the movie only does 50% of the book.
Third place would be the first 3 Dragon Lance books, those basicaly share Tolkien's vision, and they stay close to the D&D rules, but they are different in a way. Really easy to read and follow so you quickly get addicted to the storyline.
Also read the books "Pandolini" wrote, or whatever, the first two only though, want to read the third just so I finish the story, but don't care much for it, Eragon and Safira just sound weird to me, it's an obvious mixture between star wars and lord of the rings.
And I'm trying to finish George R.R. Martin's books "Fire and Ice". I got the first two but I'm going on and off on the first story... it's just dull to follow.
The clichés I'm finding a lot on the more recent novels (and movies) is the constant "Jedi" characters, basicaly it's the unique race with special skills that could take down an army, and the story always involves one of these "Jedi" characters that have failed their way, and aren't as good as other "Jedi" characters.. even though they fucking are the center of the fucking story!

Jim Butcher's Codex of Alera Series is my current favourite fantasy series. He has his own races, his own magical systems, an a unique world. The first book is The Furies of Calderon, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something past the Drizzt whining.
