Derek Blake was born in the cold winter of 1466 in the Fenmyrian town of Kiran. His parents, Adrian and Akira Blake, raised him in this town, though the locals always kept a keen eye on these two, as they never did quite fit into the Kiran community.
His father, Adrian, was known to the locals of Kiran as a knight, though of what order nobody knew. He was a pale and unnaturally attractive man, though he was rarely seen around town during the day, and generally made his trips quickly and silently on the rare occassion when he did travel by day. Being from Faerun certainly didn't help the man to fit in. Despite this, Adrian was friendly to all the locals and never ran into any trouble with the law, nobody had any real problems with him, merely suspicions as to what he actually did. Meeting, and eventually wedding Derek's mother only served to raise suspicions even further.
Akira, a Fenmyrian woman from New Pherin, was a young girl at the time, only eighteen or so. Though her father was known to have been a member of the Azan Mob who worked out of Kiran, and after his death she herself began making trips now and then between New Pherin and Kiran, bringing the locals of Kiran to believe she too was a member of the Mob, though evidence of this was never present as it was with her father.
Upon Derek's being born, the two settled down for five years in Kiran to raise him, and during that time were rarely seen leaving town or even their home. The local suspicion of the two slowly began to fade as many became fond of their young boy. Though upon reaching the age of five, his parents began traveling again, moving once every few years. They traveled through the Faerunian portal and lived in the Moonsea for a few years, then back into Fenmyr to live in New Pherin and finally Azan. It was during their stay in New Pherin, when Derek was eight years old, that his sister Alecia was born. Though Derek never became very close to the girl.
Upon reaching the age of sixteen, Derek chose to set out on his own, just before his family traveled back into Faerun to live permenantly in the Dalelands. Before setting out on his own, his father passed along to Derek a stone. Adrian told Derek that upon activating and speaking to the stone, he would be able to speak to his grandfather, Adrian's father, Daric Blake, a powerful ilussionist from Faerun. The amount he could actually communicate was limited to asking Daric questions about himself, as it was not actually a stone used to speak with Daric himself, but instead a portion of Daric's essence which he imbued into the stone, allowing his every memory, or at least all those which he chose, to be embedded in the stone. Daric Blake himself dissapeared shortly after the birth of Adrian Blake, just after making the stone and leaving it to him. The actual cause of Daric's dissapearance was unknown to all but those of the Blake family, who guard the secret. Derek learned much from the knowledge the stone offered him, and it was through this that Derek began to understand magic. His interest in magic and magical artifacts was immediately perked.
With a great interest in the arcane, as well as his own personal ambitions, Derek now seeks to make something of a name for himself, without having to dissapear as his grandfather did.
