Nicholas Lancer was born in the year 1467 near the Pheric town of Lascan. His family consisted of his father, Alex Ermore, his mother Lucretia, and his elder brother Richard.
His father was an adventurer from Faerun, though he had seemingly retired from adventuring by time Nicholas was born. He built a ranch near Lascan, and aside from the occasional trip into the city, stayed to maintain the ranch.
Lucretia was a Fenmyrian woman from New Mith. She was very intelligent and quite beautiful, and may have had some elven blood. She tutored Nicholas to read and write a number of languages as well as the history of Fenmyr.
As Nick grew, he had a number of responsibilities on the ranch, including defending it from bandits and wandering monsters if need be. His father, Alex, was an expert swordsman and had trained both Richard and Nick to wield a sword. Other than the occasional bandits, the ranch was never in any real danger.
In 1472, Nicholas sister Emma was born. When both of them were older they became very close, but Emma showed an innate talent for magic when she was 10. Nick’s mother took Emma to Sillilnyme for safety in 1484, shortly after Bruno Staord’s attack at the Faerunian portal.
When the Ilmnfeml conflict began in 1481, Richard signed up for the Pherin Legion and was deployed to the Deadlands. This was the last time Nick would hear from his brother. Nick was 14 at the time.
In 1484, Nick left the ranch for New Pherin in hopes of becoming a member of the Wandering Bulwark. Shortly after he left the ranch, a great black wyrm appeared and attacked his home. Lancer started to return when a knight riding a silver dragon appeared and seemingly fought the dragon off. He searched the ruins of the ranch, finding no signs of his family remaining. While he assumes his family died, his mother and sister escaped to Portsvalley. He would later discover the fate of his father in his adventures.
After the destruction of his home, Nicholas would continue to New Pherin and become a member of the Bulwarks. While he showed natural talent in combat along with the training from his father, he was only barely able to complete the entrance requirements. He would gradually gain combat experience on the job, earning some respect from older members of the guild.
He remained in the guild until 1490, when escorting a patron to the Kiran area caused him to become stuck in the blockade. During his time spent in Kiran he would discover a number of things about the future of Fenmyr, including the fate of the god Zinas, the Witch King, and his own fate. He was able to escape the destruction of Kiran. Upon his return to New Pherin, he spoke with Able Kanison and Reis Azira about the events at Kiran. Due to issues this caused, he was removed from the guild and advised to change his name.
Since his return to New Pherin, Lancer has gone by the name Marcus Highwind and co-founded the Red Dawn guild, now a unit of the Iron Knights of Pherin.
