It was a warm summer evening when screams came from Sophia Tane’s bedchamber. Her husband Earander and four sons went running through the tower to see what was wrong. They were met at the door by Lilla, the one of the house servants, it seemed that Sophia had gone into labor early. They sent for the town healer for they feared the worst. After many long hours, the boys and Earander heard the soft cries of the new born baby. The door to the bedchamber opened and Lilla stuck her head out for a moment to say that Ms. Sophia and the baby girl were both fine.
Brista was very tiny, even for a half-elf, it was a true miracle that she was even alive. Her hair was dark blonde with brown streaks. The boys thought she looked like a princess with her small pointed ears, and eleven facial features. They were not as lucky, for they took after their mother’s human traits. As she opened her eyes and looked around, the light sparkled off of the gold flecks in her emerald green eyes. She was a good baby and did not cry very much even when the boys would fight over who got to hold her. She continued to always be the center of their attention, for they all were very protective of her. Brista was never allowed to go anyway alone, she was their princess and nothing would happen to her.
As Brista grew, she found that she had her mother’s gift for the arcane. It was told to her that there was a Silver dragon in their family, many many generations ago, and that is where their natural abilities for magic comes from. This story intrigued Brista so she learned all she could about the silver dragon, which would explain her love of exotic things, like silk clothes, and exquisite foods. It did not help that her bothers lavished her with gifts, and trinkets, this only encouraged her to be very spoiled. Even the people of Waterdeep that knew her loved her sweet nature, and would always pamper her. It was nothing for her to walk into a room, and everyone smile, for she was a pleasant slight to look at. Most of the town boys never could even get close to her, for her brothers were always there to protect her. Needless to say, there were many fights in the streets over some young man wanting Brista’s attention.
When she turned fifteen, she was watching her brothers practice using their bows, when she decided that she wanted to try as well. Her father smiled as he watched her eleven instincts take over, she was a natural with the longbow. Of course her brothers stood in line to teach her. They also tried to teach her to use a rapier, but this really did not interest her, so she would humor then and try, but her mind would always wander to other things. She had heard of sorcerers that could put spells on arrows, and she often look through her mother’s journals to see if she could find spells that might work.
The older Brista became, the more beautiful she became as well. It was amazing that she could be such a lovely girl, and be as spoiled as she was, and still keep her sweet and loving nature. There were a few times when her temper showed, it was those times when her bothers would just stand in awe with their mouths dropped to the floor. Brista was very passionate especially if she was upset about something, nothing would stop her from getting what she wanted.
Brista spent most of her time in the tower with her mom, learning to control her arcane abilities. Her mother was a very powerful sorcerer and her father a ranger. Brista was the best of both worlds. She had the ability to use a bow and the power to channel the arcane; it was her goal to combine the two. There was a spell that Brista saw in her mother’s journal and she wanted to try. Even though her mother told her she was not ready, Brista had it in her mind she could do it. So one afternoon she took her mother’s journal and went to the lab. She spent hours reading the spell trying to understand it. Finally she took a deep breath and concentrated, she was going to open a portal and it would take her to the other side of the room. Brista whispered a few words and a portal appeared, she was so excited, she did not even think to see if the portal opened on the other side of the room before she closed her eyes and stepped in. When she stepped out of the portal she was instantly cold as she opened her eyes and looked around all she could see is snow, and what looked like a wall with a gate in it. As soon as she stepped out the portal closed instantly behind her. “Mother is going to be angry” she whispered as she walked toward the gate. Hoping she could get home before her mother saw the journal on the table where Brista left it.
Little did Brista know that her life was about to change completely.
