Land Sirens are large brown annelids that dwell within regions near rivers, lakes, or other freshwater sources. They need to keep their bodies moist, this can be done by being n water or by feeding. Compared to their smaller relatives, the common leech, the Land Sirens are extremely large, easily exceeding eight-feet in length but share other physical likeness with the smaller leeches. They are blind but have extremely acute sense of smell and touch, their hearing is moderate at best - this allows them to hunt effectively. They have a mouth on both ends of their body, though only the mouth in the front (known by a dark stripe going across it) does the blood sucking. This front mouth produces a saliva which contains various blood anticoagulants, allowing blood to continue to flow into their stomaches without the worry of it clotting. They feed until full, forced off, or killed - heat is useful in forcing off or killing it.
The reason they are called Land Sirens is they make sounds, including Humanoid types, to lure in their prey. Such as a young child crying is one of their more favorite sounds to use around Human settlements. After a few successful hunts they usually change sounds or move on. They are intelligent but cannot speak, outside of making sounds, and they do seem to understand Common.
Land Siren's saliva is highly sought after by healers and surgeons, bottles of the substance go for high amounts if one knows where to sell it. The flesh of the Land Siren is poisonous for most Humanoids to consume, those who can survive the poison claim it tastes similar to burnt toast. Besides the saliva, the rest of the Land Siren's body is worthless as far as most people are concerned, but entire specimens can sometimes be sold to mage collectors.
